Of ants and butterflies: Paces of work

Chatting with my dear colleague Thore, we came to the topic of “quick ticks“ and deep work. They led me towards recognizing a pattern of work for myself.

I get exhausted when I work „Kleinscheiß“ for a longer period of time. The context-switching takes its mental toll.

At the same time, if I find myself deeply working on tricky issues for many days, I run out of energy as well.

What I need is mix of both worlds. Sometimes I can easily lean into deep work, but I need to fresh things up by completing a couple of “quick ticks“. At the same time, after a longer list of “quick ticks“, I consciously set up focus sessions for more in-depth work.

Ant Mode vs. Butterfly Mode

Ant goes…

Full Focus, full alignment with everyone, full force

Butterfly goes…

Broad awareness, floating, sitting in the sun and recharging
